American flight controllers are more and more seeking additional employment and reporting ill, as they continue to work unpaid amid the federal closure, the transportation secretary has stated.

"The controllers are wearing thin," the official informed Fox News on Sunday, as certain aircraft were halted on the Californian coast due to personnel deficits.

Following the government shut down on October 1st, air traffic controllers, who are deemed essential workers, were told to continue performing their duties without pay.

But a number have been missing, leading terminals to stop or slow their flight operations, which has exacerbated setbacks caused by weather and additional factors.

Over three thousand US flights were delayed on the weekend, and the secretary said he anticipates the situation to deteriorate further.

"I am seeing the stress," Duffy said in an interview on Sunday Morning Futures, adding that he had spoken to multiple professionals to hear their concerns directly.

"They are pursuing second jobs, they're out there searching, 'Should I drive Uber, can I find another source of income to make ends meet?'" he added.

Duffy added that on Saturday twenty-two notifications at airports said flights would be delayed due to a lack of employees - one of the highest after the closure began.

The US government shutdown entered its twenty-sixth day on Sunday, making it the second-longest shutdown in the past.

Duffy has consistently cautioned that aviation regulators would reduce the quantity of planes in the sky if there is a shortage of security staff.

In his interview, he declined to respond straightforwardly when asked if it was safe to fly in the US, and instead issued a personal plea to controllers.

"I need my staff concentrating on the airspace, not on the monetary matters at home," Duffy stated.

On Sunday, some planes were grounded at LAX due to staffing shortages, causing disruption at the fifth most active terminal in the nation and among the most crowded in the globe, as well as additional travel extending upward to the city of Oakland.

The Federal Aviation Administration alert was issued at 8:45 AM local time on Sunday. Many flights were back on schedule by midday.

Travel at Newark Airport, however, were delayed an average of 82 minutes due to personnel issues, and the FAA said DFW, the second-busiest airfield in the country, could experience problems from low staffing later in the day.

The agency warned passengers in the state to check with airlines about revised flight schedules.

The issue comes ahead of Game 3 of the World Series, which is due to be played in Los Angeles on Monday evening, and about one month prior to the Thanksgiving break, one of the busiest periods to travel by air in the United States.

Strain on American aviation helped end a federal closure in 2019. At the time, the shutdown had entered its fifth week and affected airline operations, including aviator instruction.

It prompted several air traffic controllers to remain absent on the identical date on 25 January 2019, temporarily stopping movement at New York's LaGuardia airport.

That same day, Donald Trump, who at the period was in his first term as leader, consented to approve a short-term spending bill, effectively ending the government shutdown after thirty-five days.
