Ben & Jerry's Founding Partner Alleges Unilever Halted Pro-Palestinian Ice Cream Product
One of the original creators behind the well-known ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has announced how parent company the multinational conglomerate stopped the introduction of an innovative pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.
Ben Cohen, that co-founded the company with his partner, disclosed that he will personally create the controversial flavor within a personal collection highlighting causes the company has been barred from speaking out about.
Longstanding Conflict Between Founders and Corporate Owner
The recent development deepens the ongoing tension among the world-famous ice cream maker with Unilever, the British packaged goods giant that has owned Ben & Jerry's for over two decades.
Both founders have claimed how the parent company and their ice cream division the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked their company from "maintaining its activist principles".
Watermelon Sorbet as an Emblem for Support
Mr. Cohen stated via an Instagram video that he is creating a new watermelon-flavored sorbet, requesting consumer ideas for naming options plus additional components.
“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” Mr. Cohen stated from a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-flavored ice cream that calls for lasting ceasefire in Palestine and calls for addressing the harm that was done there.”
The watermelon has emerged as an emblem for support for Palestinians due to its coloration, which match the colors in Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Previous Social Engagement and Recent Changes
Several years ago, Ben & Jerry's refused to sell its products in areas occupied by Israel, leading to Unilever transferring the Israeli operation to a local licensee, thereby permitting continued sales within disputed territories.
This upcoming product line is being developed under Ben's Best, the socially conscious ice cream brand which was first established in 2016 for endorsing ex- US presidential candidate Senator Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Return".
Leadership Changes and Upcoming Plans
Mr. Cohen revealed how he plans to develop additional ice cream flavors focusing on issues which Ben & Jerry's was prevented from addressing publicly by Unilever.
This development comes after partner Jerry Greenfield resigned his position at the company in September, after decades of involvement, mentioning concerns regarding how the company's autonomy was undermined following corporate moves to restrict their advocacy work.
At that time, Mr. Cohen remarked that "Jerry has a really big heart and this conflict with our parent company was deeply distressing him."
"My heart leads me to keep working within the organization to fight for corporate autonomy ensuring that it can fulfill the social mission, the principles that established its foundation while upholding for over 40 years," he told journalists.
