California's Governor Confirms He Is Considering a Presidential Campaign for 2028

The California governor, a prominent member of the Democratic party, has revealed that he plans to decide on whether to seek the White House in 2028 following the 2026 elections are over.

"Yes, I would be lying if I denied it," the governor remarked when questioned about contemplating a campaign for president after the 2026 midterms. "That wouldn't be honest. And I'm not."

The governor's current term as California's leader wraps up in early 2027, and he is ineligible for re-election. However, he noted that any determination is still years away.

"The future will decide," he said.

Increased Visibility as a Political Adversary

Newsom has come to the forefront as a high-profile adversary of the Trump administration, employing his online platforms and championing a proposition that would boost the party's congressional seats in response to Republican redistricting efforts. This strategy has invited attacks from political opponents.

Federal Funding Dispute

Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, alleged that Newsom shows no concern about the state's residents in a Sunday interview on a major news network. Duffy announced plans to cut government money from the state and threatened eliminating the power to issue CDLs.

"I intend to cut $160 million from the state," Duffy stated, in the wake of a recently reported deadly accident in California involving an unauthorized trucker that resulted in loss of life and injured individuals.

The governor's team noted that the federal government had approved the worker's status on several occasions, which allowed him to secure a trucking license under federal law.

The transportation secretary had previously stated he was withholding $40 million from the state for failing to implement English language requirements for commercial drivers.

Pointed Reply from the Administration

"Ex-reality TV personality, now cabinet member, still doesn't understand national statutes," the governor's team responded in a last month's statement countering the funding warnings. "For now, unlike this clown, we rely on data: California CDL holders had a accident mortality rate nearly 40% lower than the U.S. average. Texas – the only state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate substantially higher than the state. Data speaks for itself. The federal leadership misleads."

Polling Data and Future Prospects

A recently conducted poll showed that a majority of the party and 48% of all registered voters believed that the governor must consider running for president in the next election cycle. After the current administration began, public support for the governor has grown to an mean of 33.5% from approximately 30%, while his disapproval has decreased from an mean of more than 40% to under 40%.

Earlier this year, Newsom remarked while visiting several key regions that he had "no idea" about his intentions for 2028.

He mentioned his personal struggles, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the early childhood.

"The thought that a person who got 960 on his SAT, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was always in the back of the classroom – the fact that this is even suggested is, by itself, extraordinary," he commented. "No one can say? I await who presents themselves in 2028 and who answers the call. And that remains the key point for the American people."
