Democrats Denounce Trump After He Claims They Should Face Capital Punishment
Lawmakers from the Democratic party demonstrated fury after former President Donald Trump accused a contingent of Democratic representatives of being "betrayers" and asserted they should be detained and sentenced "with execution" following their publication of a disputed video.
The Content That Sparked the Controversy
The video footage, published on earlier this week, showcases six Democratic congress members who formerly acted in military or defense positions.
"Similar to us, you all made an vow to protect and uphold this national charter," the officials affirmed in the brief video. "Currently, the threats to our constitution don't only come from foreign nations, but from within our own country. Our regulations are explicit, you can refuse unlawful commands, you can reject unlawful commands, you have to refuse improper directives. No one has to execute commands that contravene the statutes or our founding principles."
Donald Trump's Furious Reaction
The recorded statement seemed to prompt a furious reply from the previous commander-in-chief.
On later in the week, Trump posted on his preferred platform: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In a separate message, he declared: "This represents really concerning, and Risky to our Country. Their statements cannot be permitted to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent post, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a statement that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Party Leaders Respond
Following Trump's comments on that day, Democratic leadership published a joint announcement censuring the remarks.
"Partisan aggression has no position in this nation," they wrote. "Congress members who were featured in the video all worked our country with tremendous loyalty and distinction. We clearly condemn Donald Trump's offensive and dangerous death threats against congressional representatives, and appeal to House Republicans to vigorously do the same."
The Democratic leaders also said that they had been in contact with security officials "to ensure the safety of these officials and their families."
"Donald Trump must right away delete these extreme social media posts and recant his violent rhetoric before he leads to violence," the statement added.
Representatives' Defiant Answer
The officials who were featured in the video also published a statement.
"We are former service members and national security professionals who value this United States and made an oath to defend and support the constitution of the United States," they said. "This commitment is permanent, and we intend to maintain it. No intimidation, coercion, or call for violence will prevent us from that important responsibility."
"What's most telling is that the ex-president views it punishable by death for us to repeat the statutes," they stated. "Military personnel should know that we have their protection as they execute their oath to the constitution and obligation to follow only legal commands. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our obligation."
They stated: "All citizens must come together and censure the former president's requests for our execution and partisan aggression. This is a time for principled stance."
Additional Governmental Comments
The Democratic Senate minority leader also denounced Trump's comments and shared on online networks: "Let's be crystal clear: the former president is demanding the death of public representatives."
He stated: "This represents an direct THREAT. All senators, each house member, all citizens – irrespective of political affiliation – should censure this right away and absolutely."
The Republican House speaker defended Trump's claim that the Democrats had engaged in "rebellion", describing the video as "highly unsuitable", adding: "It is very dangerous, you have important representatives of Congress instructing military personnel to defy commands, I think that's historic in the nation's past."
The Conservative representative also according to sources told the press that in what he reviewed of Trump's posts, Trump was "defining the crime of sedition" but that "lawyers have to analyze the language and determine all that."
White House Reaction
During a executive branch meeting on Thursday afternoon, when asked by a reporter, "Is the president want to execute congressional representatives?", the executive branch representative answered: "Certainly not."
"Let's be clear about what the ex-commander in chief is reacting to," the representative stated. "You have current representatives of the American legislature who coordinated to organize a digital communication to members of the US military, to serving soldiers encouraging them to defy the president's legal commands."
She added: "The integrity of our armed forces depends on the chain of command, and if that system is violated, it can result in fatalities, it can result in confusion, and that's what these elected officials ... are fundamentally encouraging."
