EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says
The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
