Ex UK Soldier Accused of Killing Kenya Woman Appears in Court

A suspect has shown up before a judge as extradition proceedings began in the investigation of the victim Agnes Wanjiru, a woman of Kenyan origin who was killed near a UK military installation in 2012.

Purkiss, 38, who is a native of Greater Manchester, showed up in Westminster magistrates court on Friday, and told the court he would challenge the extradition request. Reports indicate that he was taken into custody on the evening of Thursday.

An arrest warrant for the suspect was released by a court in Nairobi in September. The prosecution stated before the Kenyan court that the individual had been charged with a sole charge, of murder, and that the Kenyan authorities would request his deportation to stand trial.

The defendant was once employed as a medic with the regiment of the Duke of Lancaster, the military regiment for the English northwest, including on deployments in Afghanistan.

Agnes Wanjiru, twenty-one, a beautician who had a young daughter, went missing after a evening out, and her body was located after two months in the premises of the hotel where she had previously spotted.

Nobody had earlier been taken into custody or charged in relation to her passing. His detention followed a recent detective probe, which was initiated after a report in 2021 by a weekly publication, in which the media outlet reached out to several serving and ex-military personnel in the regiment.

This inquiry has been spearheaded by Kenyan detectives, which, under a mutual defense pact, maintains prosecutorial power in the legal case.
