I believed I nicked it - Carey on overturned decision.

Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey revealed he thought he had nicked the ball when he was overturned on Decision Review System during day one of the third Ashes Test versus England.

Having been given a life on 72, Carey crafted a fine 106 to help the home side reach 326-8 at the close in Adelaide.

The Incident

Australia were 245 for 6 when Carey attempted a cut to seamer Josh Tongue.

England were convinced they had a wicket, thinking they had detected an edge, but on-field official Ahsan Raza remained unconvinced.

After skipper Ben Stokes challenged the decision, the footage examined by TV umpire Chris Gaffaney indicated a spike but this appeared before the ball had passed the bat.

Gaffaney added he was of the opinion there was a clearance between the bat and the ball.

Consequently, Carey was given not out.

"I thought there was a feather or some sort of noise when it passed the bat," said Carey.

"Had I been given out, I likely would have reviewed, but without much conviction. It made a convincing sound near the bat."

Technology Debate

Discussion has swirled about 'Snicko'' during the series after a series of dubious moments.

England's bowling coach David Saker indicated England may take this most recent incident to a higher level with the match official Jeff Crowe.

"So far we've let it go, but this might push us to take action," Saker remarked.

"It's been a worry for us all series long. It's disappointing that this is a post-play discussion. It is what it is."

Emotional Century

Carey's century was his maiden in Test cricket against England.

It was also an poignant moment for Carey, whose dad passed away in recent months. His spouse was emotional in the crowd as the batter marked the occasion by pointing to the heavens.

"A hundred on home soil with loved ones present is unforgettable," stated Carey.

"The reason for my look upwards is clear. I'm trying not to tear up. It was a fantastic feeling."

Previous Ashes Drama

Carey has been at the centre of Ashes debate before.

He was the wicketkeeper who notoriously stumped Jonny Bairstow at Lord's Cricket Ground in the 2023 series, leading to a febrile final day.

Regarding the overturned decision he continued: "The sound wave didn't match up. It is just the way cricket goes - sometimes you have a bit of luck."
