New York City Mayor Eric Adams to Endorse Former Governor Andrew Cuomo in New York City Mayor's Election

NYC's current mayor Mayor Adams revealed his decision to support former Governor Cuomo in the upcoming mayoral race, even after months of disagreements between the two Democratic figures.

A Surprising Reversal After Previous Accusations

Only weeks ago, the mayor had lashed out at Cuomo, calling him a “deceptive figure and a liar” and accusing him of having “a history of pushing Black candidates out of races.” Yet, in a new statement, Adams made a U-turn, revealing he now plans to appear with the former governor in neighborhoods where he maintains significant backing.

“It is crucial to mobilize the communities of color that have experienced urban displacement on how important this race is,” the mayor stated.

He added, “Residents have seen their rents increase in terms of neighborhood changes and they have been ignored in those neighborhoods, and I’m going to go to those neighborhoods and speak one on one with organizers and groups and I’m going to walk with the former governor in those areas and get them involved.”

Race Dynamics and Recent Events

The election battle has so far been shaped by the contest between Cuomo and progressive candidate Zohran Mamdani, whose rise in the polls has drawn interest globally and symbolized aspirations for a revitalized progressive wing of the Democrats.

In a recent mayoral debate, both Mamdani and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa stated they would decline the mayor's support if offered.

Earlier this year, the mayor had begun his bid for another term as an unaffiliated candidate after being indicted on federal corruption charges which were later thrown out in return for his assistance with federal immigration raids across the city.

At an separate media briefing on Thursday, the mayor responded to reporters asking about the support announcement by stating, “I’ll be with Andrew this evening.”

The announcement followed a day after Adams and Cuomo were seen attending a game side-by-side at the the NBA team's season opener at Madison Square Garden, which occurred right after a contentious candidate debate.
