Vicky McClure will return their characters in the popular crime series

The beloved crime series Line of Duty is officially returning for its seventh season, announced by the broadcaster.

An upcoming six-part series created by the show's creator starts production in Northern Ireland in the coming months, according to the network.

Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the comeback, stating she was "so excited" about the series' return. Her co-star remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together soon."

The last series wrapped up in recent years with a final episode that drew in more than 17 million audience members. Rumors about a new season have been widespread for some time, but official word only came recently.

New Challenges for AC-12

The seventh season will open with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and rebranded as the new police oversight body, according to the announcement.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain tasked to combat misconduct within the law enforcement.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, the trio will take on their "most sensitive case to date."

Fresh Face and Complex Case

An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer celebrated for takedowns of criminal networks, faces allegations of misusing his authority to act as a sexual predator.

Yet, this investigation might serve as a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still active in the background, the teaser suggested.

Speaking about the renewal, the creator said: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had countless fans watch the ups and downs of the unit over multiple series and we are thrilled to be returning for a seventh installment."

He added: "Corruption in the UK is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Actor Responses

The Scottish actor described appearing in the series as "the role of a career".

"Not only the show's success but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he added.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "Obviously I'm very happy Line of Duty is returning! Can't wait to work with the creator, Compston and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"

Adrian Dunbar noted: "While anticipating the unit days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together next year."

"Pleased with the news and looking forward to those mercurial plot developments."

Show History

Line of Duty launched in 2012 and became one of the most popular television series of the last decade, attracting guest stars such as Lennie James.

Broadcasters haven't revealed exactly the upcoming series will premiere.

The conclusion of season six brought the extended plot about the search for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and the creative team indicated at the time there were no intentions for further series.

Nevertheless, the corporation announced on this week that a new season is now in development.
