The retail giant Introduces Purchase Limits on Pokémon Trading Cards
As a notable development, Walmart has started implementing purchase restrictions on how many Pokémon trading card items customers can acquire during a single visit. This policy officially takes effect as of early November, according to a company memo distributed to employees.
Addressing Scalper Activity
While not officially confirmed by Walmart, many believe this decision was influenced by a viral TikTok video that depicted a customer purchasing a massive amount of Pokémon card items at a checkout counter. The store manager featured in the video received widespread backlash for permitting the large-scale transaction to go through.
Policy Details and Potential Loopholes
The new restriction states that shoppers may only buy up to five trading card boxes or packs each time they enter. Yet, the language has sparked debate due to its lack of clarity. Precisely what counts as a "box" is not defined, and if someone could buy five high-value Elite Trainer Boxes remains ambiguous.
Additionally, because the restriction is tied to each visit, in theory a determined scalper could return repeatedly—purchasing the maximum each time—to accumulate large quantities over several hours.
The Scalping Phenomenon
For the average collector, this approach might seem over the top, yet for resellers, it's common behavior. In recent years, scalpers have significantly added to frequent stockouts of Pokémon cards, driven by the TCG's growing fame.
Certain buyers aim to sell unopened products for a profit, while others search for valuable pulls that can command extraordinary prices. As an example, the Mega Lucario ex card from the latest set is currently selling at prices exceeding eight hundred dollars on various platforms.
Looking Ahead
The new rule coincides with the imminent release of the Phantasmal Flames set, coming on November 14th. Pre-release sales already show chase cards like the Mega Charizard X Ex listed for around fifteen hundred dollars, highlighting the persistent interest and likely scalper target.
With any luck, Walmart's restrictions will help reduce bulk purchases and increase access for genuine collectors and casual players alike.
