The distinctive yellow-fronted residential building in the background helped us locate the video.

Our team is checking video footage and photographs circulated this morning that show the aftermath of a reported car bomb explosion that authorities in Russia say killed a senior military officer in Moscow.

Officials in Russia stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that exploded and that he later died to his injuries. An investigation is under way.

The initial step to verify the location from which the images originated was based on social media reports indicating the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the Russian capital.

We used panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to match the unique yellow hue of a adjacent residential complex seen in the video.

Locating additional structures, lamp-posts and the road configuration confirmed where the footage were captured.

Additionally, we verified that the videos were new and that the visuals had not undergone digital alteration.
